       Sus origenes en el cine se situan dentro de la tarea de operador de camara y, despues, ayudante de direccion. Su carrera como director comienza realmente en 1936. Lesley Selander es uno de los grandes especialistas del western, con mas de cien peliculas a sus espaldas. Decir “uno de los grandes especialistas” no es lo mismo que decir “uno de los grandes nombres” y, en efecto, la trayectoria de Selander, en lo que a la calidad de sus peliculas se refiere, es irregular. Lo que, sin embargo, sorprende es que la valoracion media de sus westerns no es baja, lo que indica que el director poseia un especial instinto para el genero, que pone de manifiesto con una plastica mas que correcta y un buen manejo del tiempo de la narracion. Inabarcable por su extension, es dificil senalar los filmes que destacan en tan amplia muestra, pero si me veo en la obligacion de citar alguno, no dudaria en elegir las peliculas que hizo para Allied Artists a finales de los anos 40 y principios de los 50, y algunas otras de las ultimas que realizo, como Dakota Lil o The Broken Star.

       Director, guionista, productor y, en ocasiones, compositor y montador de sus peliculas, el antiguo actor Robert Emmett Tansey, de familia vinculada al medio artistico, rodo a lo largo de su vida casi cincuenta westerns, la practica totalidad de su filmografia, con los nombres de Robert Tansey, Robert Emmett, Criag Hutchison, o con su nombre completo. No es un realizador distinguido, tiene poco que ofrecer como creador de universos peculiares, y se limita a una labor rutinaria de plasmacion de historias, las mas de las veces banales, interpretadas por estrellas del western de primer o segundo orden. Como actor, debuto en 1911, pero, a diferencia de su hermano, sus atractivos en la pantalla fueron escasos debido a que era cuatro anos mayor, lo que le convertia, en un actor adolescente y no en un actor infantil.

    1893-1987
       Debuta en el cine como especialista para Edison en los anos 10 del pasado siglo, antes de convertirse en ayudante de direccion de George Seitz y, despues, en realizador de seriales. En el ano 35 empieza a trabajar para Columbia, dirigiendo westerns, uno detras de otro, a un ritmo frenetico. Durante las decadas de los 40 y 50 se convierte en el gran especialista de Hollywood en seriales, para Republic y para Columbia, llegando a dirigir para esta el que historicamente se considera el ultimo de ellos, Blazing the Overland Trail, en 1956. Como tantos otros, termino dando con sus huesos en la television. La ultima frontera (The Black Ghost) es una version reducida, para un unico largometraje, del serial The Last Frontier.

    1890-1949
       Rex Lease, Buck Jones, Johnny Mack Brown, Bob Steele, entre otros heroes del western, forman parte de la nomina de actores a los que dirigio Elmer Clifton en algunas de las peliculas de sus series respectivas. Una obra abundante la de este director- guionista-actor, dominada por westerns y peliculas dramaticas, tanto mudas como sonoras. Cuando estaba dirigiendo No Wanted, 1949, cayo enfermo, siendo reemplazado por la actriz de la pelicula, Ida Lupino, quien desde entonces le tomo gusto a eso de dirigir peliculas. La ultima de Clifton, The Silver Bandit, es postuma porque el director iba a morir, precisamente, en el ano 1949.

En el mudo trabaja para Warner. No es precisamente un realizador distinguido. Lo suyo son peliculas de bajo presupuesto, entre ellas muchos westerns, pero tambien, por desgracia, de baja calidad, opinion esta ultima no compartida por muchos, que ven en algunos de los filmes de la serie protagonizada por Tim McCoy valores que yo no he podido descubrir. El serial The Phantom of the West posee una singular novedad: el heroe enmascarado que da titulo al filme posee una voz distinta de la que corresponde al mismo personaje cuando actua sin mascara. Este truco, que pretendia hacer mas misteriosa la trama, se descubre inevitablemente cuando el oculto heroe descubre su rostro.
